In the wrong hands with the wrong cast this film would have been an absolute disaster. Fortunately, someone in Hollywood had a "Brain-turned-to-ON" day and got everything right. Frequently people consider this film "weird" or "porn", but in truth it's little more than a love story, but it's strength is in portraying an unconventional and non-Julia Roberts love story. This is true love, a love that is tested, beaten, pushed, yet ultimately found to be indestructible - regardless of how society views it. Truly wonderful.

Perhaps the only movie I've ever seen that captures the realities of a Dom/sub relationship...and manages to do it with a pro-sex, feminist twist. Gyllenhaal's Lee finds strength, identity, and self-acceptance in submission. More a tale of sexual liberation than a romantic comedy.

This is an excellent film for those looking for something different and slightly psychological. The relationship between Gyllenhaal and Spader is complicated but all the pieces are laid out for the viewer to understand. I like that the movie paces itself and allows the viewer to take in all the people involved- and how the people around the main characters have shaped them into the personalities they are. To me, despite all the issues both of them have, I found myself endeared to the characters and really supporting their symbiotic relationship. I was a bit disappointed with the pre-ending, but it the ending itself was perfect. Definitely a new favorite that I want to own!
