Satyricon (1969)

After his young lover, Gitone, leaves him for another man, Encolpio decides to kill himself, but a sudden earthquake destroys his home before he has a chance to do so. Now wandering around Rome in the time of Nero, Encolpio encounters one bizarre and surreal scene after another.

I hated this on first viewing, as it is not a great starting point into the work of one of the greatest directors, but give it a chance, it's a shame no one has the courage to make something like this anymore

Creepy, perverted, grotesque and disturbing, yet visually enchanting, erotic, beautiful and mesmerizing, Fellini paints a vivid portrait of pagan Rome in his magnum opus, Fellini Satyricon. Certainly not for the faint of heart, Satyricon succeeds with its dazzling display of colours and exotic costumes, capturing decadent Rome in all aspects, both evil and empyrean, ugly and gorgeous.

After Fellini's neo-realist period, he began to delve into dreams and the psyche for a new tone to inject into his tales. In some ways, Satyricon is one of the seminal "felliniesque" films. Combining tableaux, aural cacophony, grotesqueness, theatricality and just plain visual audacity, Fellini once again expresses his abject frustation at the current state of society (and youth expecially), showing how empty we've all become; how nothing has changed in a millenia...
