Good film, that depicts john brown for the mad man he really was that brought about the biggest waste of life in America history die to the civil war, however large parts of the film are inaccurate it is still a good film

Curtiz was probably only concerned with putting on an exciting show- which he does- but there are other things here that should be admired. Errol Flynn is a heroic Jeb Stuart, Ronald Reagan fits in comfortably as Custer (there is no indication that he will eventually become the Indian-slaughtering general that he eventually became) and Olivia de Havilland is gorgeous as always, even though her role is pretty thankless. Some stunning sequences, most notably the raid on Harper's Ferry at the finale, make for good entertainment. But what distinguishes this movie from any other is Raymond Massey's portrayal of John Brown. Even though the filmmakers clearly make him out to be the antagonist, they do try to humanize him and defend his intentions, even though they condemn his actions. What's still bothering me is the part where the female slave tells Errol Flynn that she doesn't want freedom if John Brown is going to keep killing for it. To make a black woman say that in a movie seems wrong.

Semi fictional account of Bleeding Kansas and the pursuit of John Brown is skilled filmmaking but useless as any kind of historical document. Still for fans of Flynn and the Warner stock company an enjoyable enterprise. Olivia's part is negilible, as far as her films with Errol go she's seen to much better advantage in Dodge City.

Been watching some of the old Ronald Reagan movies on TCM, and was able to catch this one from the beginning. It was a period piece of the fight against John Brown (think Harpers Ferry) starting with J.E.B Stuart and George Custer graduting from West Point - although doing a little research indicated that Stuart and Custer had a 7 yr age difference, so likely would not have graduated in the same year. It didn't matter. We didn't know the difference. We enjoyed and recommend this movie.

along w/ the always magnetic flynn and de havilland pairing, and costarring an unforgettable ex-president, this curious pre-ww2 piece about the pre-civil war (or "the wo-ah between the states!" as granny clampett used to quip) days is curiously and definitively southern in politics, altho that in no way detracts from the stirring action. max steiner contributes a rousing score, but raymond massey's john brown is the hot engine that drives this car.
