Breathtaking - a beautiful, shocking, compelling story of a world that is unmistakeably Australia, and yet so alien. It tells a simple story and raises so many questions & issues without lecturing or preaching. The local actors speaking their own language in their own environment contribute to making this film unlike anything I've ever seen before.

Nicely observed, tough with just a touch of optimism. Of course, when Godard remakes it, it will just be 100 minutes of the verandah band playing the same bloody rhythm from sunup to sundown.
