They agree to meet on the same weekend each year—in the same hotel room—and the years pass each has some personal crisis that the other helps them through, often without both of them understanding what is going on.

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen. It's a love story that has spanned a lifetime and includes all the events that happened to change two people's lives as well as the people they love. Beautifully written and superbly acted. Soundtrack is also terrific

Okay, despite the mediocre reviews, I thoroughly enjoyed the picture. Some viewers have difficulty setting aside the plot device of the adulterous affair, but what I saw was a story of two people who genuinely liked each other and then grew an inseparable love over the course of a generation together. The dialogue is moving, the drama gripping, and the character growth compelling. There's plenty of humor mixed in, as well, which for me adds up to an extremely satisfying exploration into the joys, the sadness, and the ultimate point of letting our guard down and genuinely relating.

Three stars. Great writing, but basically a boring movie. At first the comedy/suspense is awesome, but eventually everything becomes pretty dull & boring. for 1978 I expected much better from two of my favorite actors. I mean, they did their part but the writing was pretty lame.

Ellen Burstyn is absolutely terrific (as per always), and Alan Alda does what he does best (combining jokey humor and goofy charm with a lot of heart). It very much feels like watching a filmed version of a play, given the sort of claustrophobic setting of a single room for the majority of the film. It's hard to make a film like that keep the audience's interest throughout, but the stars really make it work. The story is an interesting one, albeit a bit contrived in spots, and I especially enjoy the parts in which the protagonists speak about their families and especially their spouses. It's fascinating, and kind of refreshing, to see that they love their families, despite leaving them for a tryst once a year. Very well-directed, and just a lovely film.

I absolutely love this movie! Their relationship is portrayed with such wit and style. I love how it goes through the differing events in history as they meet. Very romantic, touching and funny film!
