Salesman (1969)

This documentary from Albert and David Maysles follows the bitter rivalry of four door-to-door salesmen working for the Mid-American Bible Company: Paul "The Badger" Brennan, Charles "The Gipper" McDevitt, James "The Rabbit" Baker and Raymond "The Bull" Martos. Times are tough for this hard-living quartet, who spend their days traveling through small-town America, trying their best to peddle gold-leaf Bibles to an apathetic crowd of lower-middle-class housewives and elderly couples.

Excellent and unique documentary from the 60's. It's simultaenously very funny and a bit depressing as these old geezers go from door to door selling expensive bibles.

One of the best pieces of "direct-cinema" ever produced (as opposed to "Cinema Verite", a term the Maysles hate). A masterpiece from the brothers.

If you want a genuinely Millerian cinematic experience, the best way to go is to get hold of Salesman, a 1968 documentary made by Albert and David Maysles, along with Charlotte Zwerin.

Very compelling doc about four door-to-door Bible salesmen. I have to wonder if this was an inspiration for David Mamet while writing Glengarry Glen Ross, the similarities (especially in the lingo) are hard to ignore. What's most remarkable is how invisible the Maysles are, one never feels that the camera is influencing the action (although I'm sure it did, at least a little bit).

How many hours of footage tracking these four bible salesmen did the Maysles Brothers actually shoot to be edited into this can't-look-away portrait of sourness in a hard-luck profession? A true capsule of the 1960s that, like Grey Gardens, through its cinÃ (C)ma vÃ (C)ritÃ (C) methodology somehow allows people to reveal a seemingly unguarded part of themselves for the camera.
