Donen and Freed make a great team here. A very pleasant surprise for me as I wasn't expecting much going in. This falls right in line with the good old Hollywood musical formula that worked again and again so well. Astaire and Powell make a good team, even if they aren't dazzlingly brilliant together. I'm actually happy June Allyson (as lovely as she is) and Judy Garland (wouldn't buy her as Astaire's sister) didn't get the part. This is probably the only musical I can think of that makes me think of Kubrick's 2001. The dancing on the walls and ceiling scene is spectacular. One of Astaire's best. The one thing that strikes me about color musicals (Powell and Pressburger were not afflicted with this particular disease) is that the costumes and colors often seem uncoordinated, garish, and disgusting. Black and white is often much more effective and is always more effective if one doesn't understand how to use color properly.

Who cares about storyline? You don't watch Fred Astaire musicals for story. You watch for dancing.

I realize that the whole purpose of going to a musical such as this is to see Fred dance & see the guy get the girl. That is about all that went on in this movie. Musical or not, I need a plot. This film had one...extremely weak, but it did have one. Fred dancing on the ceiling & dancing with a coat rack is worth the price of admission. If one wants a plot or one wants to show the world that musicals are true movies with story and all that, look somewhere else.

Thankfully, you can skip through the parts that just don't hold up. In my case that's every time someone sings without dancing. Don't miss the ship board dance on the rolling sea. Remember, when they fall down, there are no stunt doubles. My favorite number is "How can I believe you when you've been a liar all your life," involving the tricky business of singing, dancing and chewing gum at the same time. Of course we all love the dancing up the walls bit, which holds up even now. The plot is so weak it's completely maddening. By the way, the official blurb for this movie doesn't even get it right. They don't actually attend the Royal Wedding. Fred Astaire's love interest is the daughter of a pubkeeper. I guess no one paid or pays attention to the plot, then or now.
