Washington to build 5,400 Southern schools in African American communities in the early 1900s during the Jim Crow era.

A fabulous film showing the impact that one man can have. Rosenwald is the anti-Trump, who considered his wealth the product chiefly of luck, and used it to support African-American schools and a pantheon of artists from Marion Anderson to James Baldwin to Ralph Ellison and Langston Hughes. Bravo for this film.

The worst thing I can say about Rosenwald, a wonderful documentary by Aviva Kempner, is that it tends to ramble. I say it, though, in the spirit of the joyous New Orleans funeral march “Oh! Didn’t He Ramble.” How could Ms. Kempner’s narrative follow anything like a straight line when her subject is so rich and varied?
