Robinson in Ruins (2010)

The eagerly awaited sequel to Patrick Keiller's London and Robinson in Space is a beautifully photographed cinematic essay on our current environmental and economic predicament, narrated by Vanessa Redgrave. Timely, provocative and studded with surreal humour, Robinson in Ruins reveals hidden histories and surprising visions (from the opium poppy fields of Oxfordshire to what seems to be a talking post box), making us consider the world around us afresh.

Keiller's follow up to his cine-essays London and Robinson In Space is another intelligent, thought-provoking piece of filmmaking.

Great to see this addition to the Robinson series of films. It's not as good as the previous two though - I can see why they chose Redgrave to replace Schofield but I think McKellan or similar would have been a better choice.

Ron Wilkinson 17 Oct 2010

A combination of poem and polemic. The obituary of a society that never had it better.

Carmen Gray 17 Nov 2010

There are moments of real absurdist humour, but Vanessa Redgrave's droning narration over endless shots of flowers makes it feel like a combo of recent radio news and a nature-themed screensaver.

Another visual essay, appending the life of Robinson from the previous films. Space is given to the viewer to consider the landscapes, the history and the politics that surround us, while nature and its custodians do what they've always done. A Marmite of a movie. Every image and every sentence loaded with meaning and counter-meaning.
