Roberto Succo (2001)

'Kurt' claims to be a sales rep. He also claims to be English in spite of his heavy Italian accent. Kurt is an habitual liar and a dangerous driver, at the very least. In the south of France he meets Léa, age 16. Between his increasingly strange dates with Léa, Kurt engages in a number of armed robberies, some successful, some not... The police are perplexed by a series of crimes including disappearances and a murder. They conclude that they are dealing with a madman... After he proposes, Léa breaks up with Kurt. The attempt to find a new girlfriend leads to a shooting by Kurt, now calling himself André. Léa's information identifies Kurt/André as Roberto Succo, psychiatric patient and parental murderer. The police hunt for Roberto covers three countries.

Just one name : STEFANO CASSETTI. Unknown before this movie, and Revelation after. Could be one of the most talented, charismatic young actors of this next years, If he can find good movies like this exceptional, intensive, nervous, must-see Roberto Succo. This fuckin serial killer movie looks so real and cold, definitely awesome.

An admirable attempt at a matter-of-fact portrait of a crazed serial killer. The trouble is, the very things which make the movie initially arresting, i.e. the non-linear structure and the lack of dramatic punctuation, make it mundane, repetitive and boring in the long term. The most interesting aspect, I found, was not the killer or his relationship with his schoolgirl lover, but the police man-hunt. A noble failure.

A very tedious and uninvolving jump into the mind of a serial killer. The kind of film that is begging to be set loose but is kept on a leash and starts to choke. Some engaging technical work is enough to keep one awake for around 50 minutes but after that expect to be nodding off.

Tedious? Hardly this outstanding French thriller is far from that,but if your used to the fast pace of American Thrillers then i guess this is not for you. What the director shows here is how utterly ordianry Succo was ,He is no Hannibal Lector just a mad bad and wanting to please criminal who mesmerizez all who meet him. It helps that Stefano Casseti is outstanding as the lead ,you are drawn into his mixed up world and a part of you cant help feeling sorry for him despite the fact he is utterly insane . Its to the directors credit that you dont get to see all his shocking crimes ,just the evn more shocking aftermaths which truth be told give the film its power. The realtionship between Succo and the teenage Lea is well handled also,with the couple starting off in love and wandering towards lies and violence as Succo becomes more and more desperate. A well executed thriller which proves once again how adept French Cinema is when it comes to this particular genre.

Anti-Hollywood serial killer flick. I really got an impression of the banalities of his everyday life. Refreshingly unglamorous. Amazing performance from the lead guy too.
