With lush, fun cinematography, creative staging, and some true powerhouse music and dance numbers, the strengths of "Matilda" more than make up for its weaknesses. Here's to the children of the revolution.

The film, on balance, is cheery, sherbet-colored stuff, bursting with goodwill for all good people. What you remember from it, however, is each scene in which elder malevolence deliciously spoils the party.

This was a pleasant journey with Matilda. She's a lovely young lady who encounters various unpleasant circumstances and comes out the better for it. We'd recommend "watch it - you'll like it.

It is overly sweetened, but totally effective and enjoyable enough. However, the duration did seem excessive and, speaking for me, since I'm not a big fan of musicals, I ended up feeling a bit exhausted. Roald Dahl's Matilda the Musical is a decent adaptation and has some good performances, but at the end of the day, the film it's pretty average Not that I don't recommend it, of course, but, even if it's not insignificant, I doubt you'll remember it before the new year begins.

Directed by Matthew Warchus, Matilda is a curious creation, one whose tone maintains the barest toehold in light musical comedy, while introducing dark, disturbing elements. The movie taps into the reality and the magnitude of childhood trauma.
