Whether for little kids or very big ones, this Matilda is fantastically fun. Great songs, great performances and plenty of baddies to boo.

Directed by Matthew Warchus, Matilda is a curious creation, one whose tone maintains the barest toehold in light musical comedy, while introducing dark, disturbing elements. The movie taps into the reality and the magnitude of childhood trauma.

Roald Dahl tells stories for children that are always a bit twisted and definitely dark. Based on his book about a young girl with special talents, this musical goes full force. From the enchanting opening baby sequence, it's obvious that we're in for some ingenious entertainment. Alisha Weir plays the title role with aplomb, but it's Emma Thompson, as the evil headmistress, who steals the show. Her character alone is devilishly evil and her musical numbers are wickedly funny. Tom Minchin's catchy songs are made even more clever with Ellen Kane's lively, inventive choreography. Director Matthew Warchus continually surprises with lovely visuals and off-kilter approaches that add to the enjoyment. Sure, this is aimed at kids and/or families, but the energetic staging is so inventive and the performances are so much fun that everyone can enjoy this devilish delight.

It seems fitting, then, that the best thing about Warchus’s film should be the energy of the children. Confidently led by Weir, they swarm the screen.

With lush, fun cinematography, creative staging, and some true powerhouse music and dance numbers, the strengths of "Matilda" more than make up for its weaknesses. Here's to the children of the revolution.
