I think very highly of John Sayles and really wanted to like this, but I couldn't get past the the bad acting. The script was well written but most of the actors were painful to watch. Yes, it is much more authentic and heartfelt than the Big Chill, but I still can't recommend it.

The more I watch of Sayles, the more overrated he seems to me. This is definitely a significant movie, in that it began that whole Big Chill trend of the 80s and early 90s. So it's got that. And it was unique for it's time. Another plus. But this is so not my cup of tea. The jokes are dated, and the whole boomer nostalgia thing drives me up the wall.

Had it not been for the ending, The Last Laugh would have been one of the best silent films I've ever seen. I know it was studio imposed, but I can't give the film points for what wasn't on screen. Secret Honor has a powerhouse performance from Philip Baker Hall, but the film's topical nature is its downfall. It takes for granted that viewers 20 years later would have intricate knowledge of everything that went on in the Nixon era. California Split was fantastic, and it might be my favorite Altman thus far, though Short Cuts was phenomenal.

Un premier film vraiment réussis pour John Sayles. Des dialogues et des acteurs vraiment efficaces!
