The thrills, chills, and intermittent gore-spills are way too few and far between to keep the loyal horrorheads from getting restless.

Faithful, though a bit pedestrian, adaptation of HP Lovecraft's 'The Case of Charles Dexter Ward'. Heavily compromised by studio interference, Dan o'Bannon has his private director's cut 'The Ancestor' which still hasn't seen the light of day.

It is indeed very hard to get Lovecraft right on-screen, but this represents one of the best attempts.

Pretty standard Lovecraft adaptation, with a female romantic interest that probably wasn't in the original (which I'll admit I haven't read). I keep reading that the special effects seem dated, but the actual "monsters" were more than sufficiently weird and creepy to me (and FAR superior to the creature in The Unnamable).
