Reclaiming the Blade (2009)

The Medieval and Renaissance blade, a profound and beautiful object handcrafted by master artisans of old. An object of great complexity, yet one with a singular use in mind- it is designed to kill. The truth of the sword has been shrouded in antiquity, and the Renaissance martial arts that brought it to being are long forgotten. The ancient practitioners lent us all they knew through their manuscripts. As gunslingers of the Renaissance they were western heroes with swords, and they lived and died by them. Yet today their history remains cloaked under a shadow of legend.

"Reclaiming The Sword" isn't much to rave about as a documentary feature, it's not very inspired in terms of editing and presentation, the constant use of stock footage gets annoying pretty quickly, and the music is overbearing. But as a document - as a piece of research and presentation of facts - it's quite fascinating. If the premise of the film interests you; if you're interested in ancient European history, if you have an interest in martial history, if you've ever been a fan of medieval historic films or even medieval fantasy; if you've ever been a D&D nerd - you'll find quite a lot to enjoy here, lots of interesting information, good and varied interviews, and lots of swordplay of every kind imaginable.

I highly recommend this movie, mainly for the subject matter. I love swords! They do a good job of generating hype and interest--lots of awesome fighting scenes. Aside from minor complaints about sound and animation, my only real problem with the film is that it felt like they were trying to stretch a little information a long way.

(***): Thumbs Up I wanted more from this documentary (it is too short in my opinion), but I was kept intrigued enough during it that I will slightly recommend it.

This movie captured my attention, from the beginning, through it's colorful music selection, iconic visual art, and thorough story telling. The tale of the blade is a long one that is made easy to digest and is a real treat for all to see. Give yourself five minutes to get drawn in by the production value and the interesting interviews of this movie. It would seem the sword, once relegated to the mantle, museums, and movie sets is, no longer, lost in time. This movie is a rare glimpse into what life is meant to be like --a chivalrous class that is based on merit-- and though it is idealistic, the idea is manageable and attainable.

Interesting, well narrated by John Rhys-Davies, interviews Viggo Mortensen and Karl Urban, along with a number of scholars and experts about the Blade, and swords as the Western Martial Arts, in opposition from the Eastern Martial Arts, and how it was lost for so long, but is now experiencing a resurgence.
