Ratcatcher (1999)

James Gillespie is 12 years old. The world he knew is changing. Haunted by a secret, he has become a stranger in his own family. He is drawn to the canal where he creates a world of his own. He finds an awkward tenderness with Margaret Anne, a vulnerable 14 year old expressing a need for love in all the wrong ways, and befriends Kenny, who possesses an unusual innocence in spite of the harsh surroundings.

A heart breaking film as we see a young boy go through the hell of poverty, and social class. It's a never ending battle of hope and reality.

The Human spirit thriving in unwarrented conditions..One of the themes of "Les Miserables"..."The Ratcatcher" Different type of film...but the most poetic film I even seen exploring this theme, but the film is a poem, it took awhile to seem into my conscientous after the viewing I didn't get it at first, but days later I understood the beauty of the film....Art in film... furture "Dine-In" film

Flat out visually stunning. Check your lungs to make sure they're still working. While the strength of the photography is front and center there is a strong yet understated story to hang it all on. One boy's world of Glasgow, and his escape from said, in the 70s during the garbage strike. As an side, while her next film "Morvern Callar" was not nearly as good, it's an absolute crime that Ramsay hasn't put out or even been involved in a feature film in over six years.

Bleak and dreary, yet somehow, likely through the use of children, Ramsey elicits compassion for and finds beauty in the people that populate this darkened world. The opening sequence is an effective bit of misdirection that makes it much easier to feel for James. And the woman who plays his mother is especially good evoking strength, stability, and softness in an understated performance.
