Ratcatcher (1999)

James Gillespie is 12 years old. The world he knew is changing. Haunted by a secret, he has become a stranger in his own family. He is drawn to the canal where he creates a world of his own. He finds an awkward tenderness with Margaret Anne, a vulnerable 14 year old expressing a need for love in all the wrong ways, and befriends Kenny, who possesses an unusual innocence in spite of the harsh surroundings.

Bleak and dreary, yet somehow, likely through the use of children, Ramsey elicits compassion for and finds beauty in the people that populate this darkened world. The opening sequence is an effective bit of misdirection that makes it much easier to feel for James. And the woman who plays his mother is especially good evoking strength, stability, and softness in an understated performance.

Extraordinarily evocative. The backdrop of Glasglow garbage strike is unique, both stunningly dismal and meaningful... an arresting portrayal of life's unheard fulminations.

Ramsay is certainly one of the finest contemporary directors. Now if she can only get her hands on good material again..

A bitterly realistic portrayal of life in the 70's in Glasgow. Frighteningly good acting from the young lead. Great filming. Gritty and upsetting. A hard-hitting debut from Ramsay.
