Rammbock: Berlin Undead (2010)

When lovelorn Michael arrives in Berlin to return a set of keys to his ex-girlfriend, Gabi, as an excuse to see her again, he finds her apartment empty save for a couple of plumbers making repairs to the central heating. Just as Michael learns from the plumber's apprentice, Harper, that Gabi has popped out for a while but will return soon, the apprentice is attacked by his boss who has unexpectedly and inexplicably transformed into a raging madman. Together, Michael and Harper manage to bundle the crazed plumber out of the apartment and barricade themselves safely inside. Within minutes, they find themselves trapped in apartment block under siege from a horde of similarly insane people, apparently hungry for human flesh.

If you're into zombie survival films, this recent German-language release is a must-watch! originally titled "Rammbock:Berlin Undead", but later released in English regions with the rather unoriginal-sounding title "Siege of the Dead", this 61 minute feature is quite a rarity. it's certainly longer than a short film, but isn't really a full-fledged feature either. but it's highly engrossing and the character-driven focus packs an emotional punch that many full-length zombie features don't manage to achieve. and the colours in the quality cinematography just ooze the whole grimy, dour, apocalyptic tone perfectly. there's certainly some quality zombie stuff that's been released lately, especially the recent tv series 'the walking dead' and 2009's much lighter toned film 'zombieland' ;)

Dreary apartment complex? Check. Post-apocalyptic undertones? Check. Wild-eyed, slavering undead with a taste for man meat? Check, check. But somehow it doesn't all come together.

A "zombie" movie that doesn't suck. It has a sense of humor without being a "wacka wacka--aren't we kooky?" type of comedy, and it has some good terror moments as well. That is, it comes across as expecting that its audience has a sophisticated sense of humor and half a brain. Are you listening, Hollywood? I might have rated it higher if it had been a bit more substantial (the credits begin to roll before the 60 min mark), but as an episode or slice-of-life-during-a-homicidal-virus-outbreak it works. Note: the "Undead" tacked onto the American release seems inaccurate as the monsters are 28 Days Later-style "infected", not Romeroesque zombies.

Rammbock: Berlin Undead 2011. Features good-looking zombies in a just ok horror movie. It stars a giant pussy of a man who can't go two seconds without saying "Gabi". (SPOILER ALERT) he redeems himself in multiple ways in the end. This film is definitely worth watching. Despite it being a German language film the subtitles flow easily and are not distracting.

A zombie movie that doesn't use ultra-violence and gore to entertain its viewers.
