Ragamuffin (2014)

RAGAMUFFIN is based on the true story of Rich Mullins, a musical prodigy who rose to Christian music fame and fortune only to walk away and live on a Navajo reservation. An artistic genius raised on a tree farm in Indiana by a weathered, callous father, Rich wrestled all of his life with the brokenness and crippling insecurity born of his childhood. A lover of Jesus and a rebel in the church, Rich refused to let his struggles with alcoholism, addiction and women tear him away from a God he was determined to love. As he struggled with success in Nashville, depression in Wichita, and oblivion in the Four Corners, Rich became one of the first of his time to live honestly amidst a culture of religion and conformity.

I want to be perfect. I want to look perfect - like I have it altogether. The truth is that I am a beautiful, beloved mess. This movie reminds me of how painful and meaningful vulnerability can be - and how much courage and strength it takes to be honest about my brokenness. I walked away with an even deeper desire to become like this raw, real, broken saint.

Realistic man looking for the Gospel to unfold. What a shame he's gone. The simple meaning of Grace gets so complicated by our strongholds. This is a profound message of Grace.

I thought it was a fantastic movie. Rich Mullins seemed to be a man tormented by his inner struggles, which came through in his music. You can feel the passion behind his writing.

This is a refreshing honest look at what a contemporary Christian artist really faces. I never really cared anything for Rich Mullins music. Still don't. But I respect who he was and where he came from after watching this movie. His life didn't resolve like most Christian movies do. He wrestled with his faith, alcohol, humility in the midst of being a star. I was very impressed that it didn't fall into the trap of becoming evangelistic in tone. Just a story and character many can relate to and sympathize with.
