This early work from director David Cronenberg is an interesting and disturbing piece of work. After a motorcycle wreck, a woman undergoes an experimental skin graft. She then starts an epidemic of human rabies. Filled with disturbing imagery and grindhouse-style cinematography, Rabid will stick in your mind for days after watching it.

Cronenberg's 2nd movie is a pretty nasty exploration of the directors obsessions most of which would show up in his later, more mature films. Medical procedures gone horribly wrong. Biological horror. Wounds serving as surogate sex organs. Typical stuff. Good horror flick for those that know what they are getting into.

All David Cronenberg movies are super cool and i grew up watching films such as 'Shivers' and 'Rabid', though I think I saw 'Scanners' first. You can see what a talent Cronenberg was later to become and i think most of his work has stood up to the test of time. 'Rabid' has a raw energy and represents a classic era of genre films, with contemporary directors such as Dario Argento and George A. Romero creating a golden trio. Exciting times!

I saw this at a festival in Huntington New York with HORROR EXPRESS, DEAD AND BURIED, FROM BEYOND and THE SHINING. Whatta lineup! Again, Cronenberg is totally way ahead of his time with the whole mutation/bastardization of plastic surgery and social parasite concepts. And the fact that he turned a porno star in a legitimate scream queen (for a moment) is a brilliant stroke in and of itself.

Not nearly as fantastic as some of his later work, but totally influential for the genre and still a pretty damned crazy movie.
