The exemplification of period drama. I have never seen sex ultra-violence and blood looking so absolutely beautiful.

Gloriously bloody and lavish, this is the film by which all Dumas adaptations should be judged.

When the French tell their history, they inbed it with an authenticity that speaks that is almost anti-romantic. They are so critical of their past, more so than any other national cinema I've seen. This film is bloody and gorgeous at the same time. Though many were not impressed with Adjani as the lady of the castle, as she was later known in the south, I think she brings a vulnerability and cruelty that is ...well cinematic.

A phenomenal film! Even without taking into consideration Isabelle Adjani's exposed derriere which, in itself, HAS to be included as one of the seven wonders of the modern world! The raw brutality portrayed, contrasted with the dreamlike quality of the film, make this one a Top Tenner!
