Quartier Mozart (1992)

The boisterous and cheerful lives of the residents of Cameroon are barely dented by incursions of supernatural power in this humor-filled rendition of traditional folk tales in modern guise. In the story, a cheerfully naughty girl crosses paths with a witch who has the power to satisfy her curiosity about men by changing her into a young man. She then becomes one of the boy suitors for the amorous attentions of a policeman's daughter. Some of the men have unusual names and even odder magical gifts: one of them has the ability to make a man's genitals disappear when he shakes hands with him.

This is definitely a movie that invokes a good deal of nostalgia for Cameroonians who grew up in Yaounde. A "mystical sex farce from Cameroon," the film features a colorful cast of characters comically depicting the sexual politics played out in this popular neighborhood and indeed in the whole country. Clearly influenced by Spike Lee, Bekolo utilizes clever editing, still photography and dialogue to draw you into the otherwise mundane lives of these characters. Definitely one of my favorite films.

The music, plot, and direction are all compelling. Though sometimes crude, the humour is not lost on an international audience. Definitely worth a watch.

Love this movie!!! It was an urban fast-paced move away from those rural poetic films that were churned out by African filmmakers in the 80s to 90s. Being a city girl, this movie made sense of some of my glocal experiences of being "African."
