Purgatorio: A Journey Into the Heart of the Border (2013)

A deeply human portrait of the chaotic reality of the US - Mexico border. Full of stunnig images and crafted like a classic city-symphony where the sum of the pieces add up to a larger whole, Purgatorio, a Journey Into the Heart of the Border brings together a universe of small stories to create a compelling and visceral cinematic experience that takes audiences into the very soul of life on the border.

Ernest Hardy 22 Dec 2014

Reyes brings a smart visual artist's compositional eye to capturing the people and environment on the Mexican side of the divide.

Marsha Lederman 22 Dec 2014

The cinematography is stunning, the images horrifically powerful, but Mr. Reyes's point would be better served if he pulled back a bit on the poetic narration.

Louis Proyect 04 Oct 2014

The reference to Dante might be obvious even if the USA is no paradise for the undocumented workers crossing the border.

John Esther 22 Dec 2014

An intellectually impressive and refreshingly angry documentary.

Cynthia Fuchs 22 Dec 2014

Purgatorio comes at the tragedies of borders again and again, finding different angles, reimagining histories and lives. In doing so, it asks you to open your eyes.
