Puffball (2007)

Architect Liffey moves to the Irish countryside with her American fiancé, Richard, to refurbish a long-abandoned cottage. Their neighbours are elderly Molly Tucker and her adult daughter, Mabs, who has three daughters but wants a son. After Richard returns to New York City, Liffey learns she's pregnant, which angers Molly and Mabs. Convinced Liffey has the baby her daughter deserves, Molly tries to use black magic to eliminate the fetus.

Director Nicolas Roeg disappoints with this mediocre (and unfortunately-titled) horror film. The capable cast does what they can with a hokey script - Miranda Richardson in particular gives a spirited performance - but the plot is ridiculous and the production values are uneven - Roeg's fluid camerawork sustains some energy, but then there's some cheesy special effects and editing that make it look little better than a cheap direct-to-DVD feature. A far cry from the sharp and original work Roeg was doing in the 70s and 80s.

Compared to the director's previous films, this is ropey like a rope shop's BOGOF sale. In fact, compared to most films, it's clown shoes. Still, it did have a story that I could follow, even if it was utter twonk.

kelly reiily is teh only good point to see in this movie, but the screenplay is reale really bad!

this starts off okay, and kelly reillly is a good actress and is watchable here, but thestory gets dull, in thesecondhalf, when the story is getting going, something about voodo,and getting pregnant, and the curse or good luck of a stone with a hole in it, it dident grab me, nicholas roegwho directed some great stuff in the past, could do better

This was a good film let down by a poor ending. It's not as bad as some reviews suggest - though I would agree it would have been better without any of the puffball bits at all, as a spooky psychological thriller creepy film it would have worked well.
