2011's finest Documentary, a gripping and emotional tale that needs to be heard and its simply criminal that it did not make the Academy Awards final list for best documentary feature!

Although a bit overly manipulative and melodramatic, this is nevertheless a fascinating and heart-wrenching story, particularly for those of us who knew only about the scientific debate over the nature and origins of language that was the initial impetus for the Nim study. The participants/characters are amazingly forthcoming; and the disconnect between the scientific background of the project and the human (and chimp) stories "behind the scenes" couldn't be more striking or more telling. It is a movie that is both intellectually stimulating and emotionally powerful.

Fascinating documentary about a 'scientific' experiment in the 70's in which a chimpanzee is raised as a human from birth & taught sign language. Like Director James Marsh's previous effort Man on Wire the film is deftly constructed as a collage incorporating archival footage, photos, 'talking head' interviews, & reenactments. Delves into some big themes with a light hand; Nature vs nurture, human identity, & even elements of the Pygmalion myth (My Fair Monkey).
