Project Grizzly (1997)

Documentary about the lifelong project of Troy Hurtubise, a man who has been obsessed with researching the Canadian grizzly bear up close, ever since surviving an early encounter with such a bear. The film documents Hurtubise's diligent work to improve his homemade "grizzly-proof" suit of armour, his efforts to test its resilience, and his forays into the Rockies to track down the grizzlies he dreams of meeting. The film manages to capture the humor of the project as well as its sincerity.

The field tests were pretty funny. Since the subject is close to my hometown, I felt like I was watching a movie starring one of my neighbors.

Curiousity after watching "Grizzly Man" made me see this. This guy is a freak and a few cards short of a full deck, but ultimately the movie is a letdown because he never goes toe to toe with a bear. Can't remommened this unless you find people with mental issues entertaining.

Worth a watch, if only to see Troy get hit by a truck. A few tremendously boring scenes serve their purpose, though uninterestingly.

This documentary by Peter Lynch is about an obsessed man, Troy Hurtubise, as he wants to come face-to-face with a bear. Troy spents years and thousands of dollars on creating a bear-attack-proof suit. There are some "Jack-ass"-esque moments where we see Troy hit my a truck, giant logs, and attacked by a biker gang. Ultimately though we never see him take on the bear. It was fun watching him "test" his suit, but there was so much buildup of a man vs. bear main event that I was disappointed when it never happened. There's also plenty of downtime where Troy talks about irrelevant things. A somewhat gratifying ending as Troy comes across what he thinks is the bear he encountered in his past. Of course this is from a safe distance and without the bear suit. This documentary had some real potential but ultimately I was disappointed. 2/5 stars. (4/12/10)
