Fascinating and tragic. This film by Herzog really shows the depth of instability in Treadwell and his love for these dangerous animals.

Would you go face to face with a Bear? Would you mess with that Bear? Would you live and die for that Bear? I don't recommend it, but Timothy Treadwell, for what it's worth, did just that. It's great to see Werner Herzog, such a versatile director, find enough art and brilliance in this man to make a film about him. This is one of the best documentaries out there. You must search it out immediately.

Werner Herzog, an intriguing & enigmatic filmmaker, couldn't have created a character as complex as Treadwell. He didn't have to.

An awesomely deep film, which takes as its starting point a social loner who loves bears to the point of insanity (of course eaten by one of whom he cherishes, a bear that Herzog points out has no discernable expression except dumb, empty hunger). By the time the film is over though, an incredibly fascinating portrait of Treadwell emerges from his own material, in addition to insights on Treadwell's relationship with his own nature and the human society that, for better or for worse, he clearly doesn't feel a part of. Truly tragic in many ways, although exemplary of what a great documentary can do.

(Review re-written 2011) My favourite documentary. An amazing character portrait of a slightly unhinged, naive, yet engaging man who lived for grizzly bears. Herzog offers the original footage of Treadwell's 13 summers with his own beautiful take on the man's life and purpose in Alaska. He reveals a film within a film; one that is truly memorable and remarkable in equal measure.
