Prince of Foxes (1949)

In 1500, Duke Cesare Borgia hopes to marry his sister to the heir apparent of Ferrara, which impedes his conquest of central Italy. On this delicate mission he sends Andrea Orsini, his sister's lover and nearly as unscrupulous as himself. En route, Orsini meets Camilla Verano, wife of the count of Citta' del Monte, and sentiment threatens to turn him against his deadly master, whom no one betrays twice...

I always like watching Orson Welles on the screen, but the movie is just blah.

Loved Orson Welles as Cesare Borgia, and, of course, Everett Sloane makes this picture. The script was such a good adaption of Samuel Shellabarger's book. And Tyrone Power plays his usual confident, cocky, swashbuckling self as the hero, full of charm and wit. Pure entertainment!

Great film,actors were brilliant,war & romance, humour & poetry plus for fab scenery and interiors from Italy & R.S.M. etc.. black & white movie in fantastic quality. I recomend it.

Great movie! Power is in one of his best acting roles. Orson Welles as Cesare Borgia (need I say more?) Renaissance era Italian political intrigue in the best Machiavellian sense, castle sieges, sword fighting, and some of the best location usage ever. I can only say I wish there was a little more swashbuckling swordplay (it is Tyrone Power, after all) but that much action and adventure might have detracted from the serious drama. On a side note, I am almost certain that fantasy writer Raymond E. Feist took several themes from this movie for his Conclave of Shadows books...an undercover nobleman delving into court intrigue, a foiled assassin becoming the hero's personal assistant, the main character's name in this is Orsini and in the book the main character's tribe is called the "orosini" and even one of the books is called "King of Foxes".
