Post Tenebras Lux (2012)

Juan and his urban family live in the Mexican countryside, where they enjoy and suffer a world apart. And nobody knows if these two worlds are complimentary or if they strive to eliminate one another.

If greeted with enough openness and interest, Post Tenebras Lux's seemingly incoherent string of scenes reveals itself as a carefully executed emotional structure that begs for, and rewards, repeated viewings.

A hyper-real naturalism alternates with the startlingly dream-like in Carlos Reygada's experimental and spiritual drama about class, sex, childhood, and death. Set in rural Mexico and shot though a lens that is liquid smeared at its edges (objects and people that pass through are briefly blurred/doubled), a uniquely hypnotic and holy catharsis is reached.

Baffling is the default setting for this movie.

this is a true masterpiece of modern mexican cinema! although it contains mesmerizing sequences and beautifully photographed landscapes of pure local mexican madness, the message given by reygadas is only crystal clear for people growing and living in mexico city in a coming of age middle/upper class outlet, with a direct relationship with the close by state of Morelos and it´s always cordial and hardworking people, occasional drips of the high class society and hypnotic trips to the pacific beaches. this is experimental mexican cinema at it´s best, not everyone will get it.

Mexican director Carlos Reygadas's "Post Tenebras Lux" is like an odd dream. In the beginning I found it completely enchanting. I was reminded of the very best work of David Lynch. But the thing doesn't hold up. There is a narrative in the film, but it gets obscured by the dreamscape. I'd love to love this, as I'm a big fan of surreal cinema, but it just doesn't work for me for the whole of 115 minutes one is made to live through it. It's always difficult to analyse why a movie is tedious or engaging, and even more difficult to explain why certain surrealism is powerful and another feels like dadaistic nonsense. I can't do it here either, I'm afraid. i can only say that "Post Tenebras Lux" didn't swallow me inside it. It plays out like a dream but I didn't experience it as a dream of my own as you do with successful surrealism.
