Picnic at Hanging Rock (1975)

In the early 1900s, Miranda attends a girls boarding school in Australia. One Valentine's Day, the school's typically strict headmistress treats the girls to a picnic field trip to an unusual but scenic volcanic formation called Hanging Rock. Despite rules against it, Miranda and several other girls venture off. It's not until the end of the day that the faculty realizes the girls and one of the teachers have disappeared mysteriously.

Enchanting, atmospheric and haunting. Australian movie making at its very best.

Mesmerizing, beautiful, and down right frightening this stunning mystery from Peter Weir is a film not to be missed. Great performances, striking cinematography, a moody music score, and an engulfing storyline combine to make this vivid film a true masterpiece. For those that are still wondering - the film isn't based on an actual event.

On top of being exquisitely shot, the performances and screenplay evoke, simultaneously, dread and nostalgia. It's a highly stylized mystery rife with sexual allegory and double entendre, and it's easily one of my top ten films of all time.
