Peyton Place (1957)

In the outwardly respectable New England community of Peyton Place, shopkeeper Constance McKenzie tries to make up for a past indiscretion -- which resulted in her illegitimate daughter Allison -- by adopting a chaste, prudish attitude towards all things sexual. In spite of herself, Constance can't help but be attracted to handsome new teacher Michael Rossi. Meanwhile, the restless Allison, who'd like to be as footloose and fancy-free as the town's "fast girl" Betty Anderson, falls sincerely in love with mixed-up mama's boy Norman Page.

This is your run-of-the-mill 50's melodrama with one exception: it tackles subject matter that, for its time, was truly controversial and groundbreaking. Matters of incest, abortion and illegitimacy are all touched upon albeit in a somewhat superficial manner. Lana Turner is once again the straight-laced serious mother hen trying desperately to control her daughter, Diane Varsi, and prevent her from making the same mistakes she did in her youth. There was a lot of potential here but the script ultimately does not live up to it.

I enjoyed this one for the notoriety that it has, but it's definitely lost a bit of the shock value over the years. Well worth a look, still enjoyably soap operatic.

Mark Robson's Hollywood version is far more enjoyable than the Grace Mattallius's trashy novel it's based upon, a quintessential small-town movie that in morality and other issues is sort of an ideological summation of the entire decade.

Not that bad of a film but it's pretty dated. Directed by Mark Robson, it's basically a 3 hour soap opera about a bunch of romances during the the 1940s. I felt the film was too long and some of the stories didn't fit, they probably could have dropped a few of them. And some scenes were way too over dramatic (particularly the scene where Allison leaves for New York *loud music*. But most of the performances are very good, but again, there were just too many characters and not enough interesting storylines. I wish they focused more on the principal and Lana Turner. Anyway, whatever, not awful, but could have been much better.

Holy wow that was intense. I bet it blew people's minds back in 1957. The ending drags a bit, but it's mostly riveting. A bit excessive, but it's too sad to be camp - serious stuff, really.
