Peeping Tom (1960)

Loner Mark Lewis works at a film studio during the day and, at night, takes racy photographs of women. Also he's making a documentary on fear, which involves recording the reactions of victims as he murders them. He befriends Helen, the daughter of the family living in the apartment below his, and he tells her vaguely about the movie he is making.

A brilliant piece of cinema that focuses on one man's perverse obsession to capture the ultimate countenance of fear on film. Mark Lewis is a murderous cameraman that is obsessed with filming his victims as they die. Powell's film does an excellent job of providing a likely explanation for Mark's bizarre and disturbing behavior that is rooted in childhood trauma induced by his father. This film cohesively links the obscure connection between voyeurism and sadistic violence through the profoundly impacting character study of one psychopathic individual. Initially rejected by film critics and virtually ruining Michael Powell's film career, Peeping Tom is now regarded and hailed as the masterpiece that it truly is.

Is this the moment that the horror film really "grew up"? It's a strong contender. A serious and powerful film about film and about the purpose of film and film's hold on a damaged psyche. Powell's shocker is expertly handled and it is easy to see why audiences in 1960 were not quite ready for such a psychological assault! Top, top quality cinema.

Made back in an era that didn't rely on a lot of gore and bloodshed to sell it, but it is still a really creepy, really bizarre, and amazingly well done film. It'd be mild by todays ultraviolent favorites but it is still a classic and a must see for any self respecting horror fan.

Like Hitchcock, Powell directed long enough that the sadistic elements always latent in his work found their way to the surface. The result is disturbing. What an understatement.

A truly creepy and disturbing film that shouldn't be considered "just a british psycho". This stands on it's own with a truly compelling lead character. The reveal as to why he is the way he is is really shocking and original. Everything about him gave me the creeps. The worst is when he kisses the girl then right after kisses the lens of his camera.uguguhghguhgugh. I think I got more creeped out after I finished it and was thinking about what I just watched. The guy is a seriously demented product of his upbringing. Did I mention there's a genuine and sort of charming romantic relationship in this, also?
