Passion of Love (1981)

In the 1860's, Giorgio (Giraudeau), a young Italian soldier is sent to a remote post, far away from his lover, Clara (Antonelli). He is lodged in the house of the colonel (Girotti). He becames friends with the colonel and the local doctor (Trintignant). Among the inhabitants of the house, there is a strange young woman - Fosca (d'Obici) who is both unattractive and mad. However, she has a passion that Giorgio will have to cope with.

Where The Phantom Of The Opera and Beauty and the Beast failed.....this movie is actually realistic without the sappy crap from POTO and the contrived happy ending from BatB.

The big draw here is Valeria D'Obici's performance as Fosca, the woman whose passione d'amore drives the whole story. The handsome officer who is her love object is predictably shallow, but stay with the movie and see what happens. I looked at this movie in hopes of seeing Laura's Antonelli, if you know what I mean, but now I don't even recall her performance or whether she had a customary nude scene. The movie's all about Fosca, and it's powerful.
