Louise Brooks is simply one of the most beautiful and charismatic women of all time. Some of the sex symbols of her day like Clara Bow, Theda Bara, Olive Thomas and Pola Negri haven't dated well, looking rather plain and even dowdy by our eyes but Brooks is ageless and timeless, still lighting up the screen and making this odd film a must see.

Pabst himself was ahead of his time. Louise Brooks plays a strikingly gorgeous, yet desperately manipulative young woman who, at some extent, can control the environment around her and shape the actions of men and the lives of women against their wills. Even if this expertly shot masterpiece brought in the end moral consequences, terrible for the immoral personas, ethical standards were challenged by that time, and Brooks acquired a cult femme fatale status. Even today, people who can see boring simplicity in silent features will be surprised by how intricate and developed this pre-Hitchcock crime/drama legend actually is. 99/100

While Alban Berg was writing an opera based on this same play by Wedekind, Pabst came up with this film version starring timeless and fiery Louise Brooks. Her acting is still a wonder to watch, even nearly 80 years later - just compare her to the other actors in the film! One of the best films in the history of cinema.

I still need to get my hands on that new Criterion... the only copy I've seen of this spectacular film is a very worn looking copy on VHS. Pandora's Box is a film that once again reminds me of mythology, but also that humans are so close to animals. Pandora cannot help that men fall for her uncrontrollably, and eventually lead themselves to their own doom. She is like a black widow spider, doing what comes naturally, trapping men and then disposing of their heads. The film itself is rather conservative stylisitcally for a silent, but allows for Louise Brooks to dominate with her vivacious and sensual presence. The film is entrancing, and it's slow progression as Lulu finds herself deeper and deeper in the pits of despair and society is so human. We almost find pleasure in watching her life self destruct, and the irony of the end is so bittersweet and tragic...
