Pandora's Box (2009)

After Japan's defeat in WWII, "Pandora no hako" follows a young man named Risuke who has contracted tuberculosis. He travels to the countryside to a unique nursing facility to receive treatment for his disease. At the sanatorium all the patients and nurses go by nicknames and Risuke decides to reinvent himself as Hibari. During his stay, Hibari develops realationships with other patients and nurses. After Hibari's friend Tsuikushi gets discharged from the nursing facility, Hibari writes to him about his relationships with Dakesang the chief nurse and Mabo another nurse that is bright and seems to like him.

By far, not only the greatest silent film of all time, but the best German film I have ever seen, outside of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari".

Louise Brooks is truly unforgettable in this portrait of an unconventional, liberated woman of the future living in stodgy, oppressive 1920's society, without really knowing the consequences of her actions due to her free-spirited ways and her kind heart. Even the arc of the plot seems to be a condemnation of her and that just makes the film all the more powerful, though perhaps a bit outdated in our eyes. It's also a harsh criticism of 1920's society, thought ironically the film was intended to uphold those very same values and mores.

Amazing film. Louise Brooks is just mesmerising, my eyes were fixed on her the whole time. Has a great moody, sexual atmosphere throughout. Overall a must see of the silent era.

Homosexuality and prostitution in a silent movie from the 1920's? Yep. You better believe it. Louise Brooks (who's smoking hot btw) gives a great performance in this German melodrama about a, there's no other word for it, slutty woman who destroys the lives of the people around her. Beautifully shot and very compelling despite the soap opera melodramatic elements
