Set in pre-Castro Cuba, a British vacuum cleaner salesman is reluctantly recruited by the British secret service to not only be an agent but to recruit others. He makes up phony information and agents, but things backfire on him when his agents start dying. Alec Guinness, Burl Ives, and Noel Coward deliver top-notch performances, especially Ives as an expatriate German doctor. Not a bad movie, slightly below The Lavender Hill Mob and The Man in the White Suit.

Good, but a little disappointing, considering the talent involved. Alec Guiness does well, but it?s not one of his more memorable performances. The story is a bit slow moving. I had a hard time getting into the film. The Cuban setting is a plus and the filmmakers make the most of it. Fine cinematography.

This is an extremely entertaining thriller with a wonderful cast, the best story writer of his generation and a wonderful director. I loved the contrast between the light wit of the dialogs and the heavy atmosphere.
