Oscar and Lucinda (1997)

After a childhood of abuse by his evangelistic father, misfit Oscar Hopkins becomes an Anglican minister and develops a divine obsession with gambling. Lucinda Leplastrier is a rich Australian heiress shopping in London for materials for her newly acquired glass factory back home. Deciding to travel to Australia as a missionary, Oscar meets Lucinda aboard ship, and a mutual obsession blossoms. They make a wager that will alter each of their destinies.

This was a pretty good adaptation of the book.

I really can't say enough about this film; it's still my favorite all time movie after seven years. I don't say it's the best made, or even the greatest story. But it's my favorite, and it says so much to me it would be silly to try and explain it. Cate Blanchett makes her screen debut in this gem, and it hits all the right notes. And speaking of music, the score by Thomas Newman (Shawshank, Green Mile) doesn't hurt. Simply beautiful.

Amazing actors, not to mention that fantastic narration by Geoffrey Rush, but it just was not what I need from any of them. I did not buy into their characters, but I don't know if that's because I wasn't paying attention, or if I really need to read the book.
