The three sons of devout Danish farmer Morten have widely disparate religious beliefs. Youngest son Anders shares his father's religion, but eldest son Mikkel has lost his faith, while middle child Johannes has become delusional and proclaims that he is Jesus Christ himself. When Mikkel's wife, Inger goes into a difficult childbirth, everyone's beliefs are put to the test.

Exceptional film about faith. "and a little child shall lead them..."

A formally complex and achingly beautiful masterpiece about faith both living and dying, and the effects it has on a small village in Jutland. Dreyer's use of space really is astounding, as his movement of the camera allows his actors to physically relate to one another during complex scenes and lengthy shots. And as he drives toward the conclusion, the film becomes increasingly emotionally involving, joyously erupting in one of the most beautiful moments in all of cinema.

Exploration into the doubt of faith. One can't help but relate the film to the prolific writing of Soren Kierkigaard, particularly the piece 'Fear and Trembling'; what one should think and do with their faith. It's no surprise to see Kierkigaard referenced on various occaisions both subliminally and explicately. Directed by one of the early auteurs from the silent era. Dreyer couldn't pry from the concept of theology, which he accomodated with various layers of existentialism. Both sides of this existential study are highlighted; the soldier of faith and the soldier of infinite resignation. Throughout the film I couldn't figure which Christian denominations both fathers associated themselves with. I assume this was intentionally pre-conceived, to emphasise the fact that differences between denominations are superfluous. The film leaves us with a metaphysical but personal ending, a truly beautiful and subversive film. An ending which means so little but also provides so much fullfilness and the absolute.

Truly one of the most incredibly compelling works of film. Dreyer is such a master. Here, he manages to deal with every major question about life and provides almost a satisfying answer. Beyond reproach.
