The film, while well-intentioned and informative, is a somewhat unfocused piece.

"Only in Theaters" is a fascinating and thought-provoking documentary directed by Raphael Sbarge that focuses on the compelling legacy of the Laemmle Theaters

Robert Abele 18 Nov 2022

Being privy to this proud, close family at such a heavy, teetering moment is naturally emotional, which means Sbarge’s occasional voice-over commentary and the overactive music score can feel superfluous. But it’s well-intentioned empathy.

Watching how it was a struggle to get people into the seats even before the pandemic and all the stress that Greg and Tish Laemmle endure is a little tough to watch at times, but Only in Theaters is essential viewing for every filmgoer.

Glenn Kenny 21 Jan 2023

Ultimately the movie is as scattershot as it is enthusiastic. . . . But the narrative about the theaters’ present-day fight for survival is undeniably compelling.
