One False Move (1992)

Following a series of drug deals and murders, three criminals -- Fantasia, Ray Malcolm and Pluto -- travel from Los Angeles to Houston, finally arriving in a small Arkansas town to go into hiding. Two detectives from the LAPD, who are already on the case, contact the town's sheriff, Dale Dixon, to alert him of the fugitives' presence in the area. Underestimating Dixon, the criminals have no idea what they are about to face.

An incredibly intelligent and tense crime thriller with amazing performances and awesome characters. Another fantastic Paxton performance as the hick sheriff with a secret. Most films would just pass off this character as a dumb yokel local, but Franklin gives him more personality than most lead characters in Hollywood dramas. A seriously amazing film. First-time director Franklin, a former actor, proves himself remarkably adept behind the camera, wringing the plot for every bit of tension, then sitting back and letting his cast stew in it.

Director Carl Franklin is a talent to watch: he gets subtle, textured performances from his fine cast; he knows how to let a scene breathe; how to create dread without strong-arming the audience. And on the subjects of racism and crime and the way the rural and inner-city experiences are linked, this modest film noir has a lot to say between the lines of its action plot.

One False Move doesn't make a single false move its own self: It's as tough and gripping as they come. It's the first movie I've seen in months where, when I was walking out, I thought to myself, "Damn! I wanna see that one again!"

A neat, though little seen, crime thriller and a solid directorial breakthrough from Carl Franklin. The clashing police styles between West Coast and Middle America comes under study as three drug dealers are suspected to be heading to a small Arkansas town where local sheriff Bill Paxton tends to the flock. Joined by two LA cops, Paxton is out of his depth with the investigation, his usual day-to-day activities normally consisting of calming down an argument between a pair of married hicks. Paxton has ambition however, and despite being ridiculed by his Californian colleagues, is set to crack the case himself, leading to an unpredictable plot twist. It's not the most glamorous crime film of the 90's, and didn't do much business, but all the performances are good, it's well written and very well directed. An obscure little gem.
