"On Chesil Beach" works despite its deceptively simple premise in part thanks to Cooke's skill with pacing, tone, and general mise en scène.

There isn't enough of that exciting 'kitchen sink' messiness in this otherwise conventional 'prestige' drama.

Ronan and Howle are lovely together, but their performances can't distract from the sense that this is a story that worked better on the page.

On Chesil Beach, Dominic Cooke’s adaptation of Ian McEwan’s bestseller, features a couple of outstanding performances, but you have to suffer through some serious heartbreak to enjoy them. If “enjoy” is even the word. This is seriously depressing stuff. But good! Really. Don’t let the downbeat vibe scare you off.

Saoirse Ronan against showcases her versatility in this quietly powerful British romance.
