As satires go, this one by the writer and director Quinn Shephard is hardly subtle — but though it lacks narrative finesse, Not Okay is brimming with provocative in-jokes for the extremely online.

Shephard’s film is a half-baked thinkpiece on cancel culture in search of a plausible narrative. While hitching her ideas to a scammer story, it loses the thread in a sea of topicality. No matter the potency contained in portions of her message, “Not Okay” is muddled by her delivery through the wrong medium

I feel like someone saw how "Dear Evan Hansen" was gonna turn out and decided, "Hey, we can do this better." Not Okay is a good movie, it shines a light on today's social media age and how people will do practically anything for their 15 minutes of fame. People whose entire existence relies upon the number of followers they have on their Instagram, Twitter on TikTok. This film attempts to showcase how sometimes....to steal a quote from Johnny Cash, "What's done in the dark, will be brought to the light." We see it all the time in today's shock jock media culture where the same internet that had brought you to the dance will take you down in a matter of seconds. Actions have consequences. The execution isn't flawless, I felt like the ending was a bit harsh considering people have done alot worse in society. Zoey Deutch is criminally underrated actress and her friendship with Mia Isaac felt real and believable.

Is the tonal marriage perfect between the over-the-top hijinks about the gross commodification of “wokeness” and melodramatic exposure of the cost those actually fighting must pay as a result? No. In many instances it seems Shephard does want us to pity Danni (Deutch’s performance almost deserves it too once she finds a conscience hiding below her vanity) despite her endgame proving the opposite.

The movie overall had some high points, but the anti gun stance takes the air out of this movie for me. Seems like a long anti gun commercial.
