An excellent, if not lengthy, use of the documentary-style horror as a means of relating a story. In traditional storytelling methods this film's story, involving an angry demon and a cursed town, would have seemed run-of-the-mill and formulaic. The hand-held aspect works marvelously to add to the intrigue of the film, as you proceed to uncover information along with the viewer's avatar in the film, Kobayashi. Definitely one that will stay with you.

One of the best found footage films yet. There are some moments in this film you'll never forget...

This is my scariest movie of all-time. The premise of this movie is something I love, a scary movie that forces people to take part in the horror. A lot of other movies have done the same thing, most recently Paranormal Activity (which I enjoyed quite a bit!), but I find Noroi just sucks me in. The director pushes his subject, tracks down every lead he can but this character he portrays doesn't go 'down the path of madness', he doesn't go crazy himself. He watches the lives of those who have been touched by something, and as we watch what that something turns out to be, the journey makes the payoff even sweeter. It's a long film but as I just said, it's the getting there part that makes it so rewarding. This film builds on its subject, a demonic spirit, until it all comes together at the final moments. Noroi the Curse is the perfect example of a scary movie; they could have done it in the fashion of Ringu, or another classic Asian horror film, but they decided to go the way of a mockumentary, and that's what truly made this film something to see for me.

When I fisrt came to Japan in 2006 I saw the Video tape in a store but didn't rent it... ...what a mistake! I've rarely been kept by the way actors played in Japanese movie... This one is so good You have to watch it just to see the way they act. I think it's an answer to the Blair Witch project. very good. I'll watch it again.

Noroi is a Japanese effort at the found-footage genre and comes off as one of the best. The film works as it employs what is best about Japanese horror. It develops an intriguing and involving mystery. The film begins with clips from all over the place. We get news footage, some documentary footage from a supernatural show, and clips from variety TV performances involving psychic children etc. At first none of this footage seems to connect, but gradually we see a piece here or there that fits into this intricate puzzle. Not only is the mystery exciting, but we are able to connect the dots ourselves. Noticing the familiarities and not having it spelled out. The creepy vibe is always present, but the true horror doesn't really begin until the third act. There were times when I honestly forgot I was watching a found footage film, and this added to the overall effect. A stunning piece for the genre as it takes it further and isn't afraid to invest in a complex story.
