Nightmare Man (2006)

Ellen receives an exotic mask by mistake and begins to have waking nightmares and hallucinations. Her husband and doctors believe she is a paranoid schizophrenic and take her to a psychiatric ward. On the way to the hospital the car breaks down, her husband rushes off to get gas, and the Nightmare Man appears. Ellen escapes and stumbles upon a country house where two young couples are spending the weekend. They do not know if the killer is real or just a figment of Ellen's tortured mind nor if the killer is outside or already inside the house.

This starts as just a run of the mill low budget slasher but ends up with some surprising plot twists which turn the film in to a supernatural thriller. Dont get me wrong, there can be no question that this is a B movie. But its one hell of a fun B movie. Its all here Nudity, gore, dark humour and reasonable FX. It also manages to build up quite abit of tension in certain scenes. But being a good film was just a bonus. I would have never of watched this film if it hadnt started Tiffany Shepis. I endeavour to see as many of her films as I can. This didnt disappoint me, as it was worth watching it just for the looking back through her legs scene. Classic Shepis!

At first, this movie was so bad that it was funny, but it soon became just plain bad. The acting was horrible and the script was really stupid. I should have known with a dumb title like this and the main character always referring to "the nightmare man" that this was going to be bad.

While it started off with a promising, if rather obvious, is she/isn't she nuts approach, the bumbling of the titular character in his attempts to kill off the initial lead was getting a bit tiresome. Then along comes scream queen Tiffany Shepis, and cronies, to kick it all up a notch in the fun department. Shepis got a lot of goofy dialogue and cheesy action-girl stuff to chew on, which normally doesn't thrill me, but I was delighted to find that she made it work. Unfortunately the film took a major nosedive for me when we finally got the clear-cut answer on the initial lead's is she/isn't she nuts scenario, but it still limped along to the finish as a vaguely watchable film.

It's not news to say that many of the movies in the After Dark Horrorfest series are of borderline watchability. Nightmare Man is in a wretched class of its own, however. A married couple finds themselves in possession of an African fertility mask, and no sooner is it out of the box than the wife begins having hallucinations (or are they?) of a masked guy chasing her with a knife. When the wife finds herself pursued through the woods, she takes refuge with a group of horny 20-somethings, and it's only then that we come to learn the secret of the mask. This is horribly schlocky stuff, even by low-budget movie standards. Script, acting, editing, cinematography, directing ? it all comes straight from the bottom of the filmmaking barrel. And pity poor Richard Moll (Bull from Night Court), whose career has sunk so low he's relegated to making a late-innings appearance as a local cop. A dire enterprise.
