Restrained, affecting and tenderly observed with a distinctly female gaze, the film takes some time to locate its center as an intimate drama of resilient sisterhood. But the delicacy of the bond etched between Fishback's Angel and her 10-year-old sibling, played by captivating discovery Tatum Marilyn Hall, keeps you hooked into this melancholy but hopeful story of fractured family dynamics.

An unflinching, understated and genuinely heartfelt drama with a raw, breakthrough performance by Dominique Fishback.

Matt Zoller Seitz 06 Aug 2018

The movie never entirely convinces us that its heroine has the capacity to kill, although her pain and loss are conveyed with skill by Fishback.

Danielle Solzman 24 Jan 2018

Night Comes On is one of the most important films that anyone will see this year, telling the story of a complex young woman who seeks meaning in her life.

Kate Erbland 01 Aug 2018

It’s a tough story, but told through a decidedly female gaze, Night Comes On blossoms into something beautiful.
