Night and Day (1946)

When his first stage show fails, songwriter Cole Porter goes off to fight in WWI until, injured, he lands in a hospital. He impresses nurse Linda Lee with his creativity, but their budding romance must wait as Cole heads home. Back in New York, he mounts a series of popular shows, and when his work brings him back to Europe, he eventually marries Linda. But success doesn't spare him from marital complications or bad news about a beloved relative.

Not my favorite. Some times I just ADORED IT (especially when Cary sang! Why wasnt he in more musicals? He's not as bad as Marlon Brando in Guys and Dolls... [sorry Brando!], he's not GOOD, but certainly not bad! He makes up for it in charm and charisma). De-Lovely was better... but all the singers in this one were a MUCH greater choice-- the new ones are so current sounding... eck. And De-Lovely was more faithful to his real life... but they couldnt say those type of things in this movie! Grant, as always, was great. I think this may be the earliest colour film with Cary in it... where his skin isn't so dark and he's not as old.

Loosely based on the so-called life and marriage life of Cole Porter with the story used as a backdrop to some of his best songs such as Under My Skin and Night and Day- hence the title. Alexis Smith plays Cole Porter's wife as Linda Lee Porter and Monty Woolley plays himself who was synonymous for the Man Who Came To Dinner.

Unfortunately nothing grabs you in this. The singers all leave to be desired and the acting is flat, even Cary Grant seems stifled somehow.

Grant plays Cole Porter in this biography of his life. It features many of his hit songs too. If you're a fan of either Grant or Porter, you will enjoy this movie.
