Nelly and Monsieur Arnaud (1995)

Nelly leaves her lazy, unemployed husband to work for retired judge Mr Arnaud, forty years her senior, after he offers to clear her bills for her. While she types his memoirs the two develop a close friendship, but Arnaud becomes jealous when Nelly begins dating his good-looking young publisher.

The attraction develops delicately and the dilemma it brings is explored with subtlety... Nelly & Monsieur Arnaud is yet another film that fortifies my belief in French cinema...

almost every script Emmanuelle BÃ©art chooses is bound to be good, but the raw forwardness and rather contrived innuendoes make it blatently obvious it was written with her casting in mind during her peak years, before her meg-ryan style plastic surgery debauchery. targeted largely to the older male audience to cater for the well known yet frustrated french appetite for excellent choices in immaculate young beauties of the opposite sex. not living to it's full potential, the dialog reaches a plateau of brilliance midway which it does not manage to maintain till the end, yet it finds strength in it's cheekiness and articulate anecdotes underpined by the rich history of Michel Serrault's character. enjoyable, even the second time around.
