Georgy is driving a load of freight into Russia when, after an unpleasant encounter with the police at a border crossing, he finds himself giving a lift to a strange old man with disturbing stories about his younger days in the Army. After next picking up a young woman who works as a prostitute and is wary of the territory, Georgy finds himself lost, and despite asking some homeless men for help, he's less sure than he was before of how to make his way back where he belongs. As brutal images of violence and alienation cross the screen, Georgy's odyssey becomes darker and more desperate until it reaches an unexpected conclusion.

Very interesting film with direction influenced by Elem Klimov's "Come and See" and Bela Tarr's style. Bleak? F*ck yeah, and it also makes you not want to go to Russia LOL. I'm never really on board, however, when a film like "My Joy" uses metaphor editing. For example, I understand the use of the scene at the house with the father, son, and deserters, but it's just placed weird in the film, kinda of like Loznitsa made up his mind to use it where ever. It works though and I liked the 3rd act. In retrospect, the beginning scene makes sense once the film ends.

I am totally amazed at the high ratings for this movie. The only word to describe this movie is terrible. First, it is in Russian with English subtitles. Second, it is impossible to follow the plot. Our best guess is that there were a number of flashbacks from the present back to the end of WW2. Third, I think the director tried to be "arty" by having long scenes with no dialogue, just flashing between faces in a crowd. By long, I mean this went on and on. This movie is by far the worst that we have seen in a long time. It was so bad - boring, slow, pointless and dark - that we gave up after about an hour. No way were we going to waste any more time.

In a word its harrowing. I started watching it and couldn't stop until the end, it does get a little weaker towards the end but the cinematography and acting keep this movie interesting from beginning to end.

A slow paced film with loads of elements. Sometimes it's darkish comedy-like, but allways put in a true and sad setting. Georgy's life as truck driver is hard but he does his best to be a nice guy. A different road movie, that's really nothing like a road movie at all. It's hard to get a grip of it. New faces, new stories, earlier years, winter, summer - it skips, and it's messy. The atmosphere is great, the images are great and we get to see some very original filming. Still, longer shots are still a typical Russian-themed feature. I did not like the shaky cam thing, even if it gave a certain "being present" effect. Well acted, well made film. Too bad it's a bit of a mess - the way the story is told and presented that is. If you give it some time - meaning watching a new scene, or a "new part" for 20 minutes without catching the earlier connections you may hang on to it. It's possible, but it killed some of the film for me. I can also add that the ending was very nice, and so was the opening scene.
