Traces over three generations an immigrant family's trials, tribulations, tragedies, and triumphs. Maria and Jose, the first generation, come to Los Angeles, meet, marry, face deportation all in the 1930s. They establish their family in East L.A., and their children Chucho, Paco, Memo, Irene, Toni, and Jimmy deal with youth culture and the L.A. police in the '50s. As the second generation become adults in the '60s, the focus shifts to Jimmy, his marriage to Isabel (a Salvadorian refugee), their son, and Jimmy's journey to becoming a responsible parent.

I don't know why, but Hispanic families on the lower end of the economic scale seem more prone to social dysfunction, at least in the movies -- and especially in this one. Nevertheless, it is a well done story, and at the end of it, I buried my face in hands and cried. It touched me that much.

Definitely one of my new favorite movies! I so can relate to the ambivalence between the father and his sons. Beautiful movie! Powerful themes! I love how he cross references things from generation to generation! Though at the end I was tempted to laugh because it was predictable, BUT I did feel really touched(teared up a little). So I give Nava that! Kudos!

here is the thing. the same summer that this movie came out, there was another film called, "mi familia" that also came out. here is the language teaching for the day, "mi familia" is "my family" in spanish. but the two moives are totally different. as in mi familia is about a cuban defeater than comes in miami in the mariel, (which ia actually a very good movie also starring morei tomei), this film my family is also very rich in culture. it is the story about a mexican family that immigranted to california and how they successed and failed the american dream and still kept their hertiage at large. it is a very good inside into the family "latin" structure. and i am not being biased, as i am latina, but from spain, many of the culture differences are there, but there is also alot of similarities. enjoy.
