This is the first of the 2007 After Dark Horror Fest that I've had the chance to see, and it was a great ride. I've been reading about this movie and wanting to see it for a while now, and it was worth the wait. Rats in Manhattan infect people turning them into rat-zombie hybrids. A group of soon to be evicted residents from an apartment building must fight for their lives against the infestation. The film has a lot of social commentary, some of which dealing with New York specifically, such as 9-11, the Iraqi War, and most glaringly AIDs (mainly the final scene). Definitely worth a watch, and one of very few truly great independent zombie films of the recent wave.

A movie from 8 FILMS TO DIE FOR. It's good for a low budget film, and the way the film is put together is so creative and stylish that it elevates "Mulberry Street" above its humble origins as an independent film.

Why has the name of this film changed from Mulberry Street?? Both the new title and cover art are lame.

Now this is what I love: a zombie film that tries something new. I can safely say that zombie rat people is definitely a first, but the film succeeds on much more than that premise. The opening setup and introduction to our small band of characters is classic stuff. This batch of lovable losers is one you can actually root for, and I was thoroughly pleased at how good the acting was by the entire cast. The directing is solid, and the low-budget (60 grand!?) never shows itself as a sore thumb thanks to some nifty visuals, great camera work, fantastic atmosphere, and above all wonderful writing and characterizations. If you laugh in the movie it's because the characters say something funny, not because it's hokey. Mulberry Street rises above the pack because Jim Mickle and co-writer/star Nick Damici actually have something to say. The film is frightening because there's more going on than just splashes of blood and gore. And for people who don't care about that stuff, there's also scary fuckin' rat people zombies.

Actually far better than I expected. Well scripted, the dialogue felt more like home video of my friends and I than your average horror flick. If you like the genre, see it.
