If your a smoker then it's a story about a pioneer... If your not you'll hate it... Would have to be 4 hours long to get the whole autobiography in but it's still quality.

Ok. Story was good to start with, so the cinema treatment would have to be dire to make it bad. Unfortunately, in trying to cram in so much we lose some of the more interesting sections, so it does tend to slow things up a bit. Gone are the laundering travel agents and massage parlors in Thailand, and the cat and mouse japes that resulted in the trailing FBI agent being put into an IRA safehouse, and IRA suspect being holed up in a CIA house and, well.., you get the picture. That clever but funny step too far that got him nicked has been bypassed, but the time is beefed out by an unnecessary back story which could have safely been told in exposition. Also, how he won over inmates in prison to the chagrin of his captors is motored through. What starts as an entertaining true life story becomes just a ho hum story of smart arse smuggler continually avoiding capture, until he gets captured. A good view but a wasted (hehe) opportunity.

Biography of Howard Marks, one of the biggest marihuana smugglers of the 80's that started smoking while studying in Oxford. This is, basically, the story of a man that got bored with his teaching job and, almost unwittingly, got involved in drug smuggling through a contact he made in university. And the rest is history, he got his highs and lows in life, and his lowest was when he was incarcerated for 7 years in a high security prison in USA separated from his wife and kids. You are surely expecting the stereotypical story about a heavily armed guy surrounded by bodyguards and bunny girls, but this is just the opposite, a family man deeply in love with his wife and good father to his 4 kids, no guns, no prostitutes, no hitmen. This is the life of an "unconventional" and succesful businessman that just happen to trade with the wrong substance, a man that was also a contact of the MI6 for a while. This movie is interesting because it becomes a learning curve about marihuana, pacific drug dealers, spies, IRA financing and the failing judicial system.

I will admit to having dozed off a bit while watching MR. NICE, but the repetitive nature of the plot--man deals large amounts of drugs, almost gets caught but doesn't, man deals large amounts of drugs, almost gets caught but doesn't, etc--was still very apparent despite the lapse of 10-15 minutes. It's not that MR. NICE is a bad movie, it's just that it's over long and takes it for granted that all of the elements (as repetitive as they are) of this nonfictional story are interesting enough to be included into the film, bloating the run time in the process.
