Mountaintop Motel Massacre (1983)

After several years in an insane asylum, Evelyn, the keeper of the Mountaintop Motel, is released and resumes doing business. She kills her young charge out of anger, but convinces the police it was an accident - and pushed into insanity, she then proceeds to target her guests, first by releasing vermin into their rooms, but then by using her trusty sickle.

Evelyn Chambers is a former patient at a mental institution who runs the Mountaintop Motel. Voices tell her to kill her daughter and guests. Most memorable part is the aspiring female singer who is a big Barbara Mandrell fan.

I wanted to like Moutaintop Motel Massacre because it was an 80s psycho-killer filmed in Louisiana even though we have no mountains. The film provides some laughs and genuine craziness, but it is so cheap, poorly acted, and unscary that it really is good for nothing more than watching with friends for an MST3K laughfest.

One of the few 80's horror films out there that I am not particularly fond of thanks in part to it's terribly slow pacing and dull moments. This is basically a female version of Psycho II as the lead woman is released from the asylum, but nothing is changed. She starts killing tenants in her motel instantly, in a couple of gruesome ways that managed to get a couple of stars for it, but otherwise, very dull. I will say it did have some creepy atmosphere going for it as well.

Dripping with creepy atmosphere, haunting music and some forbidding locations, this slasher flick is quite underrated and once it gets going, it's a rather fun thrill-ride to take. Anna Chappell is one heck of a villain - fragile and terrifying at the same time. Sure, it's pure drive-in shlock, but what else would you be expecting when you watch a movie with a title like MOUNTAINTOP MOTEL MASSACRE?
