Great adventure and travel movie that explores the complex relationship between Speke and Burton. A must see.

It is such a shame this film is dropping from our cultural memory, like a sisters ex boyfriend you don't see anymore. A film that should be mentioned in the same breath as the mission or perhaps the last of the mohicans. The acting is good, the story told however is fascinating not only on the face of it, the opening up of the dark continent, but deeper in terms of the Speke/Burton relationship. I just think its a shame we need to get our fix of adventure from fictional characters when it seems in reality our historical heroes are far more interesting. Kudos too goes to Rafelson for capturing some of the natural beauty that is the essence of Africa. If you liked Lawrence of Arabia this will not disappoint.

Wonderful movie for those of us who actually crave real adventure and exploration. The original Richard Burton is so fascinating a character it's astonishing that this is the only movie about his life. Ian Glen is great as a man tormented by Burton's rather large shadow, and Fiona Shaw plays a small role delicately, gracefully. I agree..this movie should have made Patrick Bergin a mega-star.

Realtively unknown and unappreciated, his film is fantastic and satisfying on all levels. Filmed in Africa and the UK. Beautiful scenery, violence, adventure, passion, loyalty and betrayal--this movie has it all.
